Recently we were focusing on the digestion and sleep markets which are models in terms of success. Today we would like to talk to you about the joint treatment market: a more discrete segment that is renewing itself.

The joint treatment segment is only waiting to progress

The joint treatment segment represents 6% of the value of the dietary supplement market1 . This market reached 64 million euros in January 2020, this is near stagnation compared to 2019 (-1.5%). Bone and joint treatment centred products work side by side on this market.

Joint treatments seem globally to be ensured a great future. Indeed, muscle, bone or joint disorders such as arthrosis affect people of all ages from all over the world. According to the WHO, arthrosis will become the fourth cause of disability throughout the world this year. With the increase of age in populations, this issue is largely taken into consideration. Furthermore, 23% of dietary supplement consumers are mindful of this question2.

There are many preventive solutions to answer such concerns. In this way, we are witnessing in & out combinations, a widely visible trend on the cosmetic and nutrition markets.

What are the ingredients on this joint treatment market?

There are almost infinite solutions when it comes to formulation! Several large categories of ingredients work side by side.

  • The most traditional ones are vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C is one of them as it claims to produce collagen synthesis. We can also find calcium and vitamin D3 which are first choice ingredients for bone health.
  • Antioxidants also have a major role in this joint treatment market. Besides traditional vitamin C, sourcing is turning to natural products. Therefore, ingredients such as acerola are finding their place on this market.
  • Molecules that come from connective tissue are also more widespread. We find at least one of the following: collagen, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine or even glycosaminoglycan such as chondroitin in every formula!
  • Lastly, numerous plant extracts promise joint health. Harpagophytum, turmeric, blackcurrant, horsetail and meadowsweet, etc. are all known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

And diversity doesn’t stop at the ingredients. The joint treatment segment comes in all galenic forms: soluble, capsules and tablets, etc. and PileJe Industrie masters each one of these possibilities.

This market is renewing itself

The joint treatment market is also going green! Along with the consumer’s desire to use more natural products, traditional ingredients such as glucosamine, are becoming more plant-based. Usually of animal origin (shells and shellfish) they are now being sourced from plants, marine plants and algae or are even of fermented origin.

Ingredients are also becoming more technical, for example, with turmeric sourcing where great in-depth work is being carried out on bioavailability. We must also mention the ipowder® plant extract range, 100% plant-based with an innovative extracting procedure.

And as the target group for this segment gets bigger every day, we are witnessing the emergence of healthy ageing. Young seniors are becoming significantly sensitive to ‘ageing well’ and are constantly searching for preventive solutions. An ideal opportunity for joint treatments to seduce even more people!

Despite numbers being quite gentle, the joint treatment market seems ready for success. Indeed there are numerous possibilities for innovation in this segment, from ingredients to galenics and packaging. This is all favourable ground for new projects.
